
Arvind Kejriwal is the winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for the year 2006. He is the campaigner Right to information movement. His motto is to empower New Delhi’s poorest citizens to fight corruption.
According to him,
India lacks the real kind of participatory democracy and that is its larger problem.
The root of the all problems is lack of democratic practices done by the people of India. Now, at this stage, we Indians need a complete transformation from representative democracy to participatory democracy. People should take interest and should have the right in the decision-making process. Every single Indian should be empowered. The Right to Information (RTI) Act is like an important tool for empowering the poorest of the poor.
Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur graduate. He, then, selected for Indian Revenue Service. Later, he resigned in February 2006. His NGO, Parivartan, helps citizens in Delhi to fight for their rights.
Kejriwal said about his further target is to start another movement to restrict the government from amending the RTI Act.
He also wants to promote the concept of local self-government in the national capital. Like ‘gram sabhas’.
