manmohan defends the deal

In the middle of angry protest from MPs from left parties, the largest ally of the UPA government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made his first statement after the 123 agreement in the Parliament.

He said during the speech that let the coming generation judge whether the deal was in favor of India or not.

He assured the country that India will be able to conduct nuclear tests and its nuclear weapons program would remain untouched. There was nothing to worry about in the Indo-US nuclear deal.

PM shielded the nuclear agreement while he was making a speech in Parliament and at the same time, the opposition members were shouting, ‘Take back the nuclear deal!’

PM said that country’s sovereignty had not been compromised by the nuclear deal. The government of India had not left any of India’s concern behind during negotiations. All the commitments to the Parliament had been fulfilled.

The protest from other house members was more noteworthy for its demonstration than its matter. The speaker of the house, Somnath Chatterjee, appealed to protesting members to maintain order in House. He complained repeatedly that Prime Minister cannot speak but no body was there to hear speaker’s words.

The MPs were terming the nuclear agreement as a betrayal, and accused the government of being ’sycophants’ to the United States. ‘Take it back! Take it back!’

During the protest, the PM was busy reading his speech. He said:

The agreement with the US will open new doors in capitals across the world,'’ said the PM in the Lok Sabha but by then his Left allies had walked out in protest.

Before and during the speech, the Left Front was continuously asking for a parliamentary debate on the nuclear deal. On the other hand, the NDA had asked to discuss the issue under Rule 184 asking for voting on the nuclear agreement. At last, during PM’s speech, the Left parties walked out of the house.

PM said while concluding the speech that the nuclear deal would be the matter for scrutiny every year by the US President and Congress. There is no provision that says that Indo-US cooperation will be subject to a yearly certification process. India would accept only IAEA safeguards on our civilian nuclear facilities in a phased manner only after the removal of all international limitations on nuclear trade with India.
