Orkut, Google’s social networking site, has found itself in another legal mess in India. A Delhi court has issued an order to Delhi Police to investigate the functioning of the social networking site. An Airhostess had complained against the site that somebody has published her obscene profile on it.
The complain was filed in a Delhi court by the Airhostess who made an allegation that someone opened an account in her name wherein she is being described as a ’sex-struck woman’.
She also said that there were also some phone numbers given in the account that actually belongs to one of her neighbors. The neighbor is an official at the Lok Sabha Secretariat and receiving vulgar calls.
Later, a case has been registered when the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Kamini Lau, directed the DCP (Economic Offence Wing Cell) to look into the matter through its specialized cell. The court has directed the police to file a report on it by February 9.
Earlier, a PIL had been filed to ban the social networking site, Orkut for hosting an anti-Shivaji web community.
The Airhostess has also written to the National Commission for Women and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry against her criminal defamation act.
When the family of the Airhostess reported the matter to Orkut, the site closed down the account. But within two days the profile had been opened again.
Now the Delhi Police is planning to check details about the people who have logged into Gmail or Orkut during that period to create a profile. However, there are some doubts that Google would agree to share such information with anybody.
