Well, the ‘$100 One Laptop Per Child‘ concept by Nicholas Negroponte, is the latest buzz in the laptop arena and the world community. These laptops are especially designed for revolutionizing the education methodology of children in developing countries. Nigeria has already placed an order for 1 million OLPC laptops. However, India says ‘BIG NO’ to the deal.
Why Indian Government said NO to the project?
The Education Secretary, India, Sudeep Banerjee said:
1. We cannot visualize a situation for decades when we can go beyond the pilot stage.
2. We need classrooms and teachers more urgently than fancy tools.
3. We do not think that the idea of Prof Negroponte is mature enough to be taken seriously at this stage and no major country is presently following this.
4. Even inside America, there is not much enthusiasm about this.
Personally, I think if Nigeria could place an order for 1 million $100 laptops, Indian government should have thought over the matter seriously considering the future results. After all, this technology could revolutionize the way children are educated.
