A government official says, it appears that, all the websites blocked are said to express ‘extreme religious views.’
Government sources confirmed late in the evening that some websites have been blocked based on police reports that they were fuelling hatred.
These are steps of the government of India taken after the ‘blocking edisode’. I am collecting some points for the government that may be helpful before taking such kind of steps.
# Just avoid the kind of things which are happening as nytimes.com says
* Officials at the Ministry of Communications here did not return repeated calls. Gulshan rai, an official at the ministry’s department of information and technology, said he was aware of two pages that had been blocked for spreading what he called antinational sentiments.
* The secretary for telecommunications, D. S. Mathur hung up the phone when reached at home.
* The minister of communications, Dayanidhi Maran, was traveling in San Francisco and unavailable for comment.
No resoponsible person was available to deliver the detail of the decision taken by the government.
According to the financial express
# According to cyber lawyer Pavan Duggal, the ban may be easily challenged through writ jurisdiction under article 19A relating to freedom of speech.
# Instead of banning the whole site Google India could have been contacted to shut down certain domains which seemed objectionable to the government
# On the other hand, blogs are electronic records. So, both bloggers and blogsites come under intermediaries or network service providers and can be held liable under IT Act for objectionable content.
I am again saying i said earlier that if this could be one of the means used by the government to protect national security, this is okay. But the government should come out with the proof.
However, the show of in-competency from the government is the history in India. This time it is happening with media.
Firstly, the broadcasting bill and now blog-blocking, the government should come out with a proof and issue the notice to the wrongdoing sites. If it does not do this then it will feel hard the storm.
This may be understood as the demonstration of rising government anxiety about how to control this new and mushrooming medium.
Government feels bloggers' heat now
