Government equates live-in relations with marriage for women protection

The government has taken a serious note on the rising cases of domestic violence. This time it looked determined for the safety of women. For this purpose, the Government has gone one step further to recognize a live-in relationship as a serious affair.

The law for the protection of women from domestic violence will provide equal benefits for the women who are in live-in relationships.

They are no any differences between married women and women in live-in relationships on the question of rights against domestic violence. It clearly means that now the metro-cultured live-in relationships have an official recognition.

According to the new law, whether within a marriage or a live-in relationship; verbal abuse and wife bashing will be considered as an offence. It will cause penal provision of one year in jail and Rs 20,000 fine. The offences will be non-bailable.

This is completely a shift of thought, as the government will look at the man-woman relationship from now.

However, Renuka Chowdhary, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, said, while asking on the moral part of the law as,

the Supreme Court too, earlier, has held live-in relationship as legal. The government did not say anything on the moral part of the relationship. We are concentrating on just the legal parts.
