As we said in our previous article India-US Nuclear Deal: Still Long Way to Go,, there are more steps ahead to get final approval from the US Congress on the nuclear bill.
Hence, the first barrier is crossed. The United States and India Nuclear Cooperation Promotion Act of 2006, was approved by 359 votes to 68 in the house of the Representatives. It voted to allow nuclear trade with India.
Previously, two important Congressional panels have already cleared the deal.
Now, the US Senate and the Nuclear Suppliers Group that export nuclear material, are rest in the line.
219 Republicans and 140 Democrats voted in favour of the civilian nuclear agreement and 9 Republicans and 58 Democrats voted against it.
The House also considered as many as six amendments,
# The Berman amendment went down 241 votes to 184.
# The House easily passed the Cliff Stearns amendment by a whopping 414 votes to zero.
# The Hyde-Lantos Manager’s Amendments accepted with some changes.
# The joint amendment proposed by Congresswoman Shiela Lee Jackson of Texas and Dan Burton of Indiana was approved by the House by a voice vote.
# The Jeff Fortenberry amendment provided Congress with the ability to assess any possible violation of Article One of the NPT. It was accepted by a voice vote.
