
The Center for Science and Environment, CSE, tested fifty-seven samplesof soft drinks from eleven popular brands of multinational cola companies in its own laboratory. The samples were collected from the twenty-five bottling plants across twelve cities in India.
After conducting the tests, they found that an average pesticide residue of 11.85 ppb was found in every sample. The samples had a cocktail of three to six pesticides contained.

Lindane # This is carcinogen found at an average of 5.5 ppb. It is 54 times higher than the BIS standards. In a sample collected from kolkata, it was found 140 times higher than the BIS norms. It may cause breast cancer, cancer, lymphoma, chronic liver damage, chronic hepatitis, endocrine and reproductive disorders and allergic dermatitis.
Chlorpyrifos # This is a neurotoxin. It breaches the placenta. It was found in all samples at 47 times higher than the BIS norms. A sample taken from Thane was found 200 times higher. It causes chronic neuro-behavioral effects like persistent headaches, blurred vision, unusual fatigue, muscle weakness, memory loss, lack of concentration, depression.
Heptachlor # this poisonous substance has been in India and found in seventy-one percent samples at the level that is four times higher than the BIS norms.
