Surprisingly USA has failed so far to popularize cricket despite of having a very strong cricket loving migrant population. But the dark cloud seems to be vanishing as the ICC agreed to reinstate formal recognition of the USACA last month. However, the USACA will have to hold an independent election of its officials before the end of November to keep the status.
It’s unfortunate that once taken off well USACA failed to keep the pace in order to bring cricket to the forefront. US cricket has been experiencing a tough time after 2003 Champions Trophy in England. Last year, ICC decided to halt its Project USA since they were not satisfied with the way US cricket was moving.
USACA chief Gladstone Dainty feels that high profile matches being played by India can help the game’s development in the USA. USACA in its efforts is leaving no stone unturned to engage India to bring International cricket to USA. On the other hand, ICC is extremely reluctant about India’s proposals to arrange high profile matches outside its own Future Tours programme.
Interestingly, India has already sold the TV rights for a series of games in neutral countries over the next five years for £125m.
It is alleged that USACA combines a great potential and a very poor administration. Earlier, USA was banned from taking part in ICC Intercontinental Cup just because two factions vying for control failed to agree on a team to represent them in the competition.
