The Australian federal Police are busy in the investigation on the detained Indian Dr Muhammad Haneef for his alleged connection in the failed terror plot in London.
Indian electronic media has already started media trial against the family members of the other two Indian detained in London in the connection with the failed terror plot in London and Glasgow.
No body should support any kind of terror act anywhere in the world but one should wait for the charges to be proved against any accused. The Civil liberty groups in Australia has raised its voice against AFP and asked why Dr Muhammad Haneef is still under detention without being charged in a Brisbane watch house.
He is facing detention for the past nine days in connection with the failed UK bomb attacks. The Civil liberty groups have said that he is not getting natural justice in the detention. However, the authorities have said that because of the complexity of the case, he is still under detention.
Now, the AFP has applied for more time to detain Haneef. This is the third occasion that the AFP has applied for more time from the court. This is a clear invasion of anybody’s natural justice.
Dr Muhammad Haneef is an Indian doctor. He was working as a registrar in a Gold Coast hospital on 457-work visa. The report says that the AFP has applied for 5 more days for the detention.
AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty told media that the case is very complex in nature and more than 230 police officers are involved in the investigation. The demand for five more days is just reasonable.
The previous extension of the detention has been expired at 6 PM on Wednesday. Downtime is the period in which a person can be detained without charge before the 12 hours of questioning begins.
Haneef’s lawyer told media that they could challenge it merely on the fact that we’ve been denied natural justice because no body is there to justify why the detention is getting third extension.
Haneef has been held without charge under Australia’s new counter terrorism laws. There is no specified maximum time limit for detention in the legislation. Civil liberty groups are calling on the Australian government to review these laws.
On the other hand, The Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock has said that Haneef’s detention is necessary because the police teams are examining more than 31,000 documents seized from across Australia. As far as the extension to the detention is concerned a magistrate determines the length of time a person can be held without charge in Australia. The reasonableness and the evidence limit it.
